Spec.dock is simply the best way to use Apple's portable media devices in your vehicle and provides a seamless link between your music and your vehicle with no messy wiring or tacked-on accessories

Notes

The spec.dock has a female dock connector on the end of a 3 foot cable that connects to the end of your existing iPod cable. If you are purchasing an iPod adapter that does not come with a cable you must purchase the cable, the spec.dock will not connect into the unit.
iPod adapter is not included.
When you check out you will be asked what iPod you will be using so we can send you the correct insert .
Additional inserts are available for $5.

I found the blurb on the product. notice that it says inserts are $5. Is that the docking bit? That would be cheap and perfect it was.

If you look I think you'll find the insert is just the white part into which the iPod sits (so not including the part which fits into the ashtray). You generally get one of those inserts free with an iPod anyway for using it with a dock.

that's exactly what I mean. you can use that bit as part of your own custom made docking station.

I thought this was really clever, if you use the stereo to control the ipod....

This is part of the problem... rather than having a "dock" into which I can plug my iPod/iPhone I'm instead looking for a compartment which will hold it upright and in easy reach (with it still inside a case), just to hold it while I use it plugged into the AUX input. I suppose the best terminology for what I'm looking for is just a "snug holder" for iPhone/iPod in cases.

This is why I'm geared more towards getting the ProClip as it stands: http://www.proclipusa.com/brodit-device-holder/apple-ipod-classic-80-gb/adjustable-holder-with-tilt-swivel-875214-16706.aspx

Just before I go for it and order the ProClip I've bought one of these on eBay (it was only £3.99) on the off chance I can somehow mount it in the little compartment above the stereo. I think it'll fit, it's just getting it to stay in there and potentially fold away into it

Any idea where I can get a small drawer mechanism so it can be slid in and out the compartment? ;)

i would start off by buying another compartment for your dashboard, so at least you can modify one without ruining your original. :-)

I went for the Pro-Clip in the end (or Brodit if you're in the UK) as they are custom made for your make/model of car. The holder I ordered is adjustable in size too so I can use it for both my iPod and iPhone depending on which I'm using at the time.

Overall it cost around £35 (but at least now my iPod isn't wedged in the ashtray!)

Sorry to bring back an old thread, but I'm swapping my head unit at the weekend and just wanted to clear something up. I have the same set up, so, this random blue wire on the ariel connector went where exactly?
Like you I have the blue/white wire on the adaptor leads also. Did these just plug together?
Image
And the adaptor has a little black box wired in, mine has a random black wire with a ring on. Where did you fit yours?

the aerial power lead needs to go to the blue wire on the main harness adapter. It's to power the aerial diversity amp in the boot.

The black ringed wire screws on to the back of the head unit. But i'd just tape over it and leave it.

on the main harness, i believe the two blue wires connect together and then remove that label so you can connect the blue wire from the aerial adapter.
